an open, seemingly endless road. it’s ripe with metaphors about life. everyone tells you that going to college is like driving down an open road because the destinations are endless, that we make our own path in life. recently, with friends beginning to leave for college, i’ve started to ponder if we do forge our own paths. 

the college we chose to attend is supposed to be our first big decision made solely by us, but then i think about it and realized that the decision, like every other decision we will make in our lives, is dictated by our circumstances. the circumstances of our existences are the strongest influences we have when making a decision, which makes me question whether or not we have the ability to change them.
